Eastern Market before fireEastern Mkt Interior
Question: So how old is Eastern Market really?

Answer: Let me throw a few dates out at you:

1805: Eastern Market is one of three public markets proposed in the L’Enfant Plan by order of President Thomas Jefferson.

1873: EM relocated to its present site where the South Hall is designed by Adolf Cluss.

1908: The Center and North Halls, designed by Snowdon Ashford, Inspector of Buildings of the District’s Office of Public Works, were added.

1964: The Market was designated a D.C. Historic Landmark and then...

1971: listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

2005: A plaque on the side of the South Hall was dedicated by our Mayor Williams and the Mayor of Heillbronn Germany, Cluss’ birth place, marking the 200th anniversary of Jefferson’s proclamation establishing the Market and 100 years after the death of Adolf Cluss.

Eastern Market Fire Damage by Annie EarlyQuestion: When did the fire happen?

Answer: The fire that burned down the Market occurred on April 30, 2007.  Afterwards, Mayor Adrian Fenty committed to building the temporary East Hall for the displaced merchants and rebuilding and renovating the historic Market building as quickly as possible.

On the day of the fire, the Capitol Hill Community Foundation established the Eastern Market Committee and began raising money for emergency expenses of the Merchants and Farmers, such as refrigerated trucks, display tables, scales and other equipment so they could
operate until the East Hall could be constructed.  Through community contributions and fund raising events that took place throughout the Hill, over $450,000 was raised.

Question: Was the Aquatic Center always there?

Answer: The Aquatic Center used to be a Fire Station!  Can you believe it?!?!

Question:   When did the Pottery Studio start?

Answer: Fun fact; the Pottery Studio used to be located on the second floor of the Center Hall but was relocated at the southern end of the South Hall basement (near Agora Farms' weekend stand is located).  It was established in 1967.
